This October 20th, 2016, more than 217 million credit union members around the world are joining in the celebration.

About half of all credit union members are Americans (108.1 million!), but if you're not one of them, this Oct. 20th is a great opportunity to visit a local credit union, shop around for financial services, and find out whether or not you can get a better deal at a credit union.

Key Differences Between a Bank and a Credit Union

Only 36% of people surveyed by the Credit Union National Association (CUNA) were aware that credit unions are not-for-profit financial institutions. This is just one of the many differences between a traditional bank and your local credit union.

1. Credit Unions Have Members

You're not a client; you're a member or owner of the credit union. You're required to make a deposit in a savings account (often from $25 to $100) that grants you a share of the credit union.

2. You Must Be Eligible for Membership

Typical fields of membership include employee groups, associations, religious or fraternal affiliations, and residential areas.

3. You Can Vote on Key Issues

Including electing unpaid officers and directors for the credit union to establish operating policies and other key issues. Each member has one equal vote, no matter how small his or her deposit.

4. Deposits Are Insured by the NCUA or State or Private Insurance

While qualifying deposits in banks are insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), deposits in federally chartered credit unions and those with headquarters in Arkansas, Delaware, South Dakota, Wyoming, or the District of Columbia are insured by the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA). Each individual account, joint account, trust account, retirement account, and business account at any federal credit union is insured for up to $250,000. If you have a savings account, a trust account, and a Roth IRA at a federal credit union, you're covered for up to total of $750,000. State chartered credit unions and those with headquarters in states other than the ones listed earlier may be covered by either state or private insurance.

5. Credit Unions Collaborate With Each Other

Many credit unions offer shared branching that allows you to make deposits and withdrawals at locations other than that of your own credit union. With nearly 30,000 ATMs and more than 5,000 shared branches, credit union members have more direct, surcharge-free access to their money than most traditional bank customers do.

Why It Pays to Take Part in Credit Union Day

In a nutshell: higher savings rates for your deposits and lower costs for your loans.

Let's compare some financial products from credit unions with those from banks, as of June 2016:

Credit unions had a national average rate of 4.40% for five-year home equity loans, while banks had a 4.97% average rate.

A 15-year fixed-rate mortgage would have only cost an average 3.06% per year at credit unions and an average 3.10% at banks.

A classic credit card would have only charged you an average 11.56% at credit unions and an average 12.66% at banks.

A $10,000 five-year CD yielded a national average 1.51% at credit unions and 1.22% at banks.

A 48-month new car loan charged a national average 2.61% at credit unions and 4.58% at banks.

A $2,500 money market account paid a national average 0.17% at credit unions and 0.12% at banks.

Year after year credit unions demonstrate that they are working hard to get you the best bang for your buck. (See also: 9 Good Reasons to Choose a Credit Union Instead of a Bank)

What Can You Expect on International Credit Union Day

Several credit unions around the country will provide special offers and freebies to their current and new members.

1. Even Lower Fees

CUNA advises credit unions to offer loans or new share draft accounts for the same fees that credit unions charged the year they opened.

2. Free Money or Freebies to Open a New Account

The Eagle Community Credit Union in California is offering a $25 deposit and a lunch tote to new account holders from October 1 until October 31, 2016. The Meridian Trust Federal Credit Union in Cheyenne, Wyoming is offering a $50 Visa gift card to those opening a new checking account.

3. Chance to Win a Discount Off Your Qualifying Rate for a New Loan

The University of Hawaii Credit Union is offering on October 21 and 22, 2016 the chance to pull a rate as low as 1.49% APR or up to 0.75% off your qualifying rate. "Checking in" at the event with your Yelp app will get you 0.25% off your qualifying rate.

4. Free Gas Cards

Other credit unions may offer you incentives to receive free gas cards when you bring a completed certificate to a participating car dealership. If you get a new-car loan with the credit union at a qualifying dealer, the gas card can be of higher value.

5. Chance to Win Free Money

Last but not least, some credit unions may just be handing out money. In 2014, the Royal Credit Union in Eau Claire, Wisconsin handed out cups filled with $2 bills and fliers about the credit union to 500 students. All cups were entered into a drawing for five real $2 bills.

6. Opportunity to Fundraise for Your Community

The River Cities Community Credit Union in Atchison, Kansas hosts every year a hot dog meal fundraiser to donate to the Atchison County Food Pantry. Several credit unions host fundraisers to contribute to the local community.

The Bottom Line: Save the Date!

From a better saving rate for your deposits to a competitive new car loan to a freebie to boost your emergency fund, there is a lot you can gain from International Credit Union Day. The truth is, despite all our issues, we're still a pretty awesome country — and there's no sign of that stopping anytime soon. Thus, this Independence Day, put politics aside to appreciate all the freedoms, freebies, and fun stuff this country has to offer — without asking for too much in return.

1. Take a Penny, Leave a Penny

We've all been a cent or two short at the convenience store, and the little take a penny, leave a penny dish by the cash register helps keep us from breaking another bill or having to put everything back because we don't have the extra few cents. If you've ever taken advantage of this uniquely American concept (they were common in Canada, too, until the country eliminated the penny from their currency in 2013), be sure to do you part by leaving a Lincoln or two the next time you see one.

2. Paying It Forward

You've heard tales on social media about somebody who started a trend at, say, a coffee shop or tollbooth to pay for the person behind them. Sometimes these random acts of kindness stop after a few customers, but every once in a while, Americans let their generous spirit really shine, like the time over 700 people paid it forward at a Starbucks in Florida. Paying it forward doesn't always have to be in a financial capacity. You can pay acts of kind forward any way you see fit, so long as you're doing something nice for somebody — which the world needs much more of.

3. Our Commitment to Global Health Initiatives in Developing Countries

The American government isn't just concerned that you're healthy at home. It has a stake in the health of the world's people, too — especially those in developing countries that are more prone to diseases. It recognizes the importance of providing those in need a better quality of life and lessening the ripple effects within our own borders by reducing the chance of devastating epidemics and pandemics. Hallmarks of U.S. leadership in global health include The U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, The President's Malaria Initiative, and Feed the Future.

4. Free Dry Cleaning for Job Interviews

Not every dry cleaner offers free cleaning services to those in need, but there are a few good men and women out there who happily open their doors to the homeless and unemployed to have their interview garments professionally cleaned and pressed.

5. Free Soft Drink Refills

As a general courtesy to patrons, most restaurants in the United States offer free refills, as do other establishments, like movie theaters. They don't have to, but they do — because they appreciate your business.

6. Free Breakfast and Lunch Programs in Public Schools

There is room for improvement in our school's lunches — especially compared to other countries like France and Italy (have you seen the gourmet meals those kids eat!?) — but we at least get an A grade for offering students in need free meals when they may otherwise not eat anything healthy (or at all) at home. In some places, those free meals are extended throughout the summer (in my neighborhood in New York City they're available), which makes this program above average in my book.

7. Holding Doors for Each Other

Holding the door for someone behind you is a custom in many places around the world, granted, but it's still worth recognizing because it's an important aspect of our own social culture. We've passed the habit down through generations, and it's still alive and well today.

8. Letting Someone With Fewer Items Go Ahead of You at the Grocery Store

I'm particularly impressed when there's someone in front of me at the grocery store with a cart full of items who invites me to go ahead of them since I'll be quick with the five or so items I have. Thanks to those who do this; if you haven't, try it the next time you're out.

9. Stopping Your Vehicle at Crosswalks to Let People Pass

I grew up in the suburbs of Baltimore where you waited for the walk sign to change or you didn't go. When I moved to southwest Virginia for college, I remember being at a crosswalk once that didn't have a walk sign and the traffic stopped completely to allow me to cross. I was hesitant at first — I thought it was some kind of joke — but it turned out to be one of those totally mundane experiences that I'll never forget.

10. Asking Strangers to Watch Your Stuff When You Run to the Bathroom

Have to potty while you're working at a café or hanging out on the beach? Because Americans are pretty great, all you have to do is ask your neighbor to watch your personal items for a few minutes while you're gone and they'll usually oblige. Just don't try this at airport; it's a "see something, say something" culture around those parts, and asking a stranger to watch your luggage will make them feel very uncomfortable.

11. Safe Havens Where Minority Groups Can Feel Comfortable Among Their Own

While I wholly condemn segregation, I do think it's important for minority groups who feel oppressed by another group (whether that assessment is accurate or not) to have places they can go to be themselves. I speak from experience as a gay man who has found solace, security, and friendship in establishments primarily frequented by other LGBT people. In other parts of the world, these places don't exist, and that's a real shame, but here at home they're abundant and well attended.

12. Neighborly Courtesies, Like Bringing in Your Garbage Cans

One of my neighbors is always super helpful, especially when I'm away from home, by taking out my garbage and returning the cans, shoveling my sidewalk if he gets out there first, and mowing my front lawn when he's feeling particularly energetic. That kind of neighborly attitude makes the neighborhood — and my own experience in it — better, and I try to return those favors whenever I can.

13. Interracial and Same-Sex Marriages

Yeah, we have a long history of denying rights to minority groups, but we're blazing trails this century to end all that. We've come a long way, even though we have a ways to go for full equality for all, and that alone makes this a good time to be alive in America.

14. America's Public Libraries

Attendance at libraries has dwindled over the past two decades, thanks in large part to the Internet, but America's free library system is still thriving and striving to provide those without access to technology the means to continue educating themselves.

15. Free STD Testing

If you can't afford to visit your doctor to get an STD test — or you're just embarrassed — there's likely a clinic in your area that provides anonymous, free testing so you stay up-to-date on your health status. As my own little PSA, if you haven't been tested lately, do so; you owe it to yourself.

16. Little Free Library

I love this idea of these little boxes, most of the time shaped like tiny houses, erected in neighborhoods where bookworms can add a book or take a book without charge. The program was popularized in Wisconsin in 2009, and today it includes more than 15,000 locations worldwide.

17. The Honor System

The honor system applies to many things — like Halloween candy left on porches by folks who are out for the night, and in my neighborhood, a free garden where residents can pick an amount of veggies that they'll eat. Even as we get more and more disconnected, it's nice that we still have values and morals and a small, neighborly trade system that helps hold ourselves and each other accountable without much effort.

18. Free Outdoor Movies

I'm always talking up free outdoor movies. I think it's one of the best summer date nights ever, and I'm so excited that the concept has spread like wildfire across the country. You'll likely find outdoor screenings near the place you call home during the warmer months — seriously, it's like every town in America is doing it these days (and that's awesome!) — and all you have to do is show up with a blanket or chair and a few snacks and settle in for an evening under the stars in the greatest country on earth.

What are some of the little things that you think help make and keep America great? Now that I have a Chick-fil-A nearby, it is hard to resist the delicious food, but even more so the amazing customer service.

As much as I love Chick-fil-A, I do not love that it costs almost $30 to feed my family of four. So I have rounded up the best tips to get discounted and free food at Chick-fil-A. No need to send me a thank-you note — a Chick-fil-A gift card will do just fine.

1. Use the Calendar Card Once a Month

At the end of each year, Chick-fil-A sells calendars for the upcoming year. These calendars have promo cards attached to them. Each month, they offer one free food item. These cards come with six mystery offers (usually for a full-price salad or sandwich) and six disclosed offers, which are usually for a large drink or fry.

I did not find out about these counter cards until last month. However, I was still able to hop onto eBay and purchase two calendars and cards for $15.99. Despite only having them for two months and missing January through April's offers, I've already redeemed $20 worth of food and drinks.

You are only able to have one card per customer, and to use one card per order. But, you are able to get a card for every member of your family! (See also: 14 Secret Fast Food Menus Revealed)

2. Download and Use the New Chick-fil-A One App

Chick-fil-A just released their new app, One, which allows you to earn points through your mobile phone. Also, if you download and sign up for the app before June 11, 2016, you will get a free sandwich. Not only will you be rewarded right away, but the app is very similar to Starbucks' rewards program. Scan your app every time you order Chick-fil-A, and you will earn credit toward free food. Also like the Starbucks' app, you can order ahead and pay with the Chick-fil-A app.

3. Dress Up for Cow Appreciation Day

This is one of the most well-known ways to get a free Chick-fil-A meal. Chick-fil-A holds a cow appreciation day each year in July. Individuals that dress partially like a cow will get a free entree. Those who don a full cow outfit will get a free meal. It is speculated that cow appreciation day 2016 will happen on July 8th.

4. Check Your Local Chick-fil-A Social Media

Check in with your local Chick-fil-A to know what special offers are going on. For example, many locations gave away free food to active and retired military during Memorial Day. Currently, my Chick-fil-A is giving away a free breakfast item every Wednesday morning in June, whereas the Willoughby, Ohio Chick-fil-A gave out free breakfast every Friday morning in May. Be sure to follow your local Chick-fil-A's social media accounts to be in the know, rather than the general Chick-fil-A accounts.

5. Buy a School Fundraiser Card

Chick-fil-A is also a big contributor to local schools and charities. Many times, they will contribute a free drink or another small freebie to fundraiser cards. For my area, Chick-fil-A offers a free frosted coffee with any purchase with the use of the school fundraiser card. I did pay $10 for this card, which also has many other local deals on it, but even if I just used it at Chick-fil-A, the card would have paid for itself in three trips.

6. Ask About Senior Discounts

Chick-fil-A's are individually owned and operated, but many locations have a senior discount for individuals 55 and older. Typical offers are a free drink or coffee, or a 10% discount. Check with your local restaurant to confirm.

Not only is Chick-fil-A generous with their free food offers, they are one of the top restaurants that contributes to local communities. Take a closer look at Chick-fil-A, and you will see that they contribute quite a bit of money to local schools, charities, scholarships, and more. It's even better when the free stuff is actually stuff you want and like. Through the help of a small personal website and my Amazon review account, I have been able to review — and keep — over $1,000 worth of goods for free.

Here are my simple tips to increase how many freebies you can score each year.

It All Starts With a Good Amazon Account

If you want to be approached by companies, you have to have an Amazon review account that is full of reviews. Not all of my reviews are great, but if you can take the time to write some helpful and detailed reviews for products you already own and love, then you will increase your chances of being seen by a company. Companies will go based off of reviewer ranking and helpful vote counts.

I also highly recommend updating your Amazon reviewer profile to include a little about yourself, your email address, and your picture. My profile says something like, "Yes, I will review your product. Just email me." A few companies have reached out to me through my profile to offer me a product to review.

Have a Small Website

A small website, even one that is on a free WordPress or Blogger platform, can help you get stuff for free to review. Some review sites will have specific requirements, such as X number of Facebook followers or X number of pageviews each month. I have found that most of the Christian publishers I review books for have very easy restrictions, since Amazon reviews tend to be the gold that most publishers are going for.

Try Reaching Out to Companies Directly

Maybe you don't have a website but instead a social media account or YouTube channel with quite a few subscribers. If you are not approached by companies already, try reaching out to them.

A few years ago, I ran a site called The Thrifty Wife, which was not popular, but it had about 1,000 views a week. I looked at other sites that were comparable to mine and saw what they reviewed. I then would reach out to those companies asking if they were interested in exchanging their product for a review. This might be out of your comfort zone, but it worked for a few products.

Companies usually have a PR or marketing department, and those individuals most likely do not have time to research every social media account. Most of the extremely popular websites and social media accounts are hard to get a hold of or charge companies to review products. This is where individuals with a decent following come into play.

Book Publishers That Offer Review Copies

I review Christian books as a part of Tyndale, Moody, and HarperCollins' book reviewing programs. However, there are several programs available for both Christian and non-Christian books. Check publisher's websites to see if they have a reviewer program or a first look newsletter. Many indie authors are usually more than happy to provide free digital copies for reviews, so don't be afraid to reach out.

Bethany House

Tyndale Blog Network

Hay House

Blogging for Books

Tywebbin

Moody Publishers

BookBrowse

Radiant Lit

The Vessel Project

Springer

Other Product Review Sites

Right now, I am a part of Blue Ribbon Reviews, which offers free and heavily discounted items to review. I have received a backseat car organizer, reusable baby food pouches, and food containers for less than a $1 a piece, and they were things I could use anyways. So far, their free items I have seen offered have been for sleep-inducing syrup and wallets.

The other company I review for is All Star Review. The site has offered 100% free items, but you are alerted of the free item a day before it launches, and then it is a first come, first serve basis the day the freebie is live.

Obviously Amazon's Vine program would be ideal, but I am still waiting for my invite. You can check out these other sites, too. Some are for free products, and others are for deeply discounted items.

Lucky21

AMZ.one

The Review Effect

Home Product Testing

Product Elf

Snagshout

Giveaway Service

I have received several great things for free that have been very useful to me, including many organic food items and books that were on my "to read" wish list. However, there have been times I have been asked to review random things, such as a TV antenna or a refrigerator filter that didn't go with my fridge model. To avoid bringing clutter into my home, I only review products I want or know that I will use.

What have you been able to review for free?

This article is from Ashley Eneriz of Wise Bread, an award-winning personal finance and credit card comparison website. It's become so bad that we are always skeptical, and look for asterisks or legal copy to see what the catch is. But, even when there doesn't appear to be one, free is not always what it's cracked up to be.

Here are eight instances when something free may end up costing you in the long run. (See also: 20 Ways to Entertain Your Kids for Free)

1. Free Shipping

As an occasional eBay seller, I know the power of free shipping. In fact, one of the most popular ways to sort products on eBay is to click the box that says "free shipping."

When researching this, I discovered that it was better to charge $19.95 for a product and offer free shipping than it was to charge $14.95 and $3.95 shipping. As you can see, the latter is actually the better deal — but people don't see it that way. So the next time you are looking at deals online, do some comparison shopping — especially on eBay. You will find that on many occasions, identical products work out cheaper when you actually opt to pay separate shipping.

2. Free Checking

Many banks will lure you in with free checking, but don't sign on the dotted line until you really understand what's being offered. For instance, my "free" business checking account comes with a $15 monthly service charge if I don't pay at least three bills each month using the bill-pay service. That one was news to me.

You can also find a whole host of fees that you will have to pay to handle your money, ranging from wire transfer fees and checkbook costs to ATM fees, minimum balance fees, and others. Oh, and the second you go into the red, expect to be hit with a whopping fee (usually around $35), even if it was only by a few bucks for a few hours.

3. Free Big Prizes

We're not talking about winning a couple of tickets to a show or an mp3 player. If you are lucky enough to win something big, like a home, fancy vacation, or a car, be prepared for the cost implications that will follow. The big problem being taxes.

For instance, many people on the show Extreme Home Makeover were thrilled to see their old home become an extravagant mansion. But once the cameras had gone, they were left with massive property taxes, big energy bills, and steep insurance hikes. Their financial circumstances didn't change to cover those costs, and they either had to sell, take out a home equity loan, or in some cases, declare bankruptcy. If you win a big car, or dream vacation, you will have to declare this to the IRS. So, be careful before saying yes to anything like this. It may be a dream come true, but can you afford it?

4. Free Pets

You see them advertised on Craigslist, local ads, and even in the break room at work. Someone's pet has a litter, and they want the kittens or puppies gone quickly. Hey, a free puppy, that's great! Well... yes and no.

Your new addition will need a lifetime of food, care, and veterinary visits. Right off the bat, you'll have to pay to have your "free" pet vaccinated and spayed or neutered. If you choose a puppy that will grow into a large breed, you can expect to pay hundreds each month for food. And if your pet gets sick, the vet bills can be insanely expensive. If you want to avoid that, pet insurance is another hefty monthly cost. The big question is, do you have the financial stability to accept a free pet?

5. Free Hotel Breakfasts

"Hey look, it says here we get a complimentary breakfast every morning!" Actually, you've already paid for it. No hotel would stay in business by giving away tens of thousands of dollars in food and beverages every single day.

The simple fact is, the cost of that breakfast is incorporated into the price of your hotel room. For example, instead of charging you $135 per night, the hotel charges $150 per night and includes "free" breakfast. Of course, if you're smart and book the hotel with a price comparison website like Hotels.com, you may get the room for way less than the advertised price. In that case, the other guests are paying for your free breakfast.

6. Free Meals/Tickets for Listening to a Pitch

You know the saying, "There's no such thing as a free lunch?" Well, sometimes it's spot on. In this instance, you're asked to listen to a sales pitch in exchange for a free meal, tickets to a show, or even a free vacation. Sounds like a good deal, but it isn't.

It turns out you have to spend at least 45 minutes of your time listening to a pitch about timeshares, or investment opportunities, or new baby products (yes, this happened to me once). And once the presentation is over, you will be given the hard sell — the super hard sell. These people don't like to give away free meals or show tickets without converting enough people into customers to make it worth their while. So ask yourself, is your time free? Because you are paying for your "free" gifts with it.

7. Free Extra Gadget — Just Pay Shipping and Handling

You can already see the conflict in that statement. Many times on TV you will see those very sales-y infomercial products. After being blasted for 90 seconds about all the amazing things it can do, you are suddenly surprised with the fact that the order will be doubled if you call now. And, very quickly, a voice says, "Just pay shipping and handling."

Well, guess what. You're actually paying for that extra gadget. In fact, the whole pricing model is based on the cost of selling two items to you, not just one. The additional shipping and handling fee is a nice little bonus on top, as the cost of shipping was already calculated in the original cost of the product. It's all smoke and mirrors, but it's a very effective way to get people to buy. And, if you want to test the theory, call and ask to buy just one of the product at half the cost. You won't get very far.

8. Free Stuff on Craigslist

Many people I know like to browse through the "free" section on Craigslist in the hope of snagging a real bargain. Most of the time, what's being offered are items that are either too difficult or too costly for the owners to dispose of themselves.

From time to time, you will find something decent on there. But before you say yes, remember it's not actually free. You have to go and pick up the item, which means you're spending money on fuel, putting miles on your car, and of course, using your own time (which is valuable). You may also need to repair the item in question. A good example I saw recently was a movie projector. Offered free, because it needed a new bulb that cost almost $100. So, do your research, ask questions, and see if the free item is actually worth your time and money.

What free things have you picked up only to regret the actual cost later?

Like this article? But as savvy personal-finance gurus, we've learned how to cut back where we can. Consider this list of everyday things you shouldn't be paying for, and then let me know some of the basic freebies you live by in the comments below. Happy saving!

1. Wi-Fi Outside Your Home

Unless one of your neighbors is technologically inept and has left their Wi-Fi network unlocked, you probably have to pay for your own Internet connection at home. Okay — par for the course. But if you're paying for Wi-Fi outside of your home, you're giving into a system that takes advantage of impulse buyers.

Plenty of places offer free Wi-Fi these days (Starbucks, Panera Bread, and even many McDonald's) as an incentive to come in and sit for a while. But then there are times when you really want to connect, and the only option is a paid connection (airplanes, anyone?). Don't fall for it. Load your devices up with everything you need to relax or read beforehand (like books, documents, movies, and TV shows), so you don't have to pay to get online. One day, in a perfect America, we'll never have to pay for public Wi-Fi. Consider your refusal to do so today a stand for the future.

2. Condiments

How much ketchup, mustard, and mayo do you use? I use very little, so the packets that I can harvest from my occasional take-outs and order-ins suit me just fine for when I need them at home. Even more expensive commodities like sugar, jams, and honey can be found if you're looking hard enough — like those packets and individual jars that are common at the resorts and hotels that you may visit on vacation.

3. Napkins

Free napkins are virtually everywhere you go, from rest stops to fast-food joints to the bars at your local restaurants. They're at your place of employment, the doctor's office, and even at your local theater. Pick up a few every time you go out and you'll never need to buy another napkin again.

4. Water

One of the most brilliant capitalism coups of the 20th century was convincing people to pay for water in bottles. Um, hello — we live in America, where we have some of the cleanest, tastiest water on the planet (which our taxes cover, by the way). Fill up a reusable bottle already. It's 2016, my friend.

5. Bank Fees

One, you shouldn't have a checking account that's charging you a monthly maintenance fee. If you're banking at an institution that's siphoning money from your account just for being part of its brand, change banks — stat! Also, stop visiting ATMs that charge fees. I've gone to ATMs whose fees were upwards of $5 before, and that's just not acceptable. If you know you'll need cash on a night out, take out how much you think you'll need. You're already paying inflated prices for drinks — do you really need to pay $5–$10 extra in bank fees when all is said and done?

6. Fitness

Nobody — and I do mean nobody — needs to pay for a gym membership. Exercise is free if you want it to be. There are plenty of workout and fitness videos available for free on YouTube and other resources to help folks who are pinching their pennies lose weight and get in shape.

7. Your Mobile Phone

Mobile phone companies are fighting so hard for your business these days that they're offering free phones to switch carriers, sign new two-year contracts early, and other incentives. Listen to me: You do not need to the latest and greatest phone as soon as it hits the market. Cool your jets, wait a bit, and upgrade when it's available to your for free as a result of your continued business with your carrier — or one to which you switch. They need you, not the other way around.

8. Books

Hello! Paperback or hardcover, your local library has a wealth of books for rent and for free. Oh, and did we forget about borrowing from friends? That's still totally legit, ya know. (See also: 17 Cool Jobs for Book Lovers)

9. Credit Reports

Every one of us is entitled to a free annual credit report by decree of the federal government. Never, ever pay for one. The credit report you get in January should be accepted by anyone who needs to see it until at least a year later.

10. Run-of-the-Mill Computer Programs

Google Drive, with all its components, pretty much replaces any need for the Microsoft suite of office software. If you can't afford Microsoft or other programs — and they're fairly pricey if you have to buy them yourself — there's no need to fret. Online resources have your back.

11. Ice

It's frozen water, ma'am and sir. Even though we weren't born magicians, we're all capable of turning water into ice, at home, for free. Stop buying it!

12. News

It's everywhere, and, frankly, print media can't keep up with the immediateness of the Internet and social media. If you're connected, there's no point in buying anything in print anymore.

13. Tax Prep

Unless your taxes are complicated — like, say, if you own a business, and you require an accountant — there are resources online that allow you to do your taxes efficiently and effectively, which, in turn, results in a quicker payday than if someone else were on the case for you.

14. Cable TV

Nearly every show you watch is available either for free online by its respective network or a streaming service that charges far less than the monthly cable bill you're paying.

15. Long-Distance Phone Calls

One word: Skype. Or, okay, two words: FaceTime. Either way, long-distance phone calls should be dead to you by now.

16. Museum Tickets

Almost every museum offers at least one day a month where admission is free. Even better, some museums are part of programs — like Bank of America's Museums on Us — where entire weekends are free. Before you fork over the cash to view and enjoy what, frankly, should belong to the American people and not private entities (especially those getting tax breaks for being "not-for-profit" organizations — but I digress), research the museum you'd like to visit and see how you can get in without paying a dime.

What are some other everyday things you shouldn't be paying for?
