I chose the Bank of America® Customized Cash Rewards credit card for streaming because my banking relationship gives me two benefits: enhanced cash back and a separate debit-card subscription credit.
Prices and terms checked .
I’ve been a Bank of America Preferred Rewards member since March 2017. Today, I hold Preferred Honors status under the BofA Rewards loyalty program.
Using standard benefits at the BofA Rewards Preferred Honors tier, the subscription budget below could return $211.79 annually: $115.79 from Customized Cash Rewards (or CCR) plus $96 from eligible debit payments. An eligible new CCR account could raise the first-year total to $288.98.
The approach is simple: one qualifying subscription on debit; the remaining eligible subscriptions on Customized Cash Rewards.
Key takeaways
- A BofA Rewards Preferred Honors member could earn $211.79 in ongoing annual value on this $228.41/month streaming budget by combining the Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards credit card with the separate BofA debit-card subscription credit.
- The strategy puts one eligible subscription on a BofA debit card to earn up to $8 in monthly subscription credits, while putting the remaining eligible streaming purchases on Customized Cash Rewards to earn cash back.
- With Preferred Honors benefits, this comparison models Customized Cash Rewards at 4.5% ongoing cash back on eligible Online shopping.
- An eligible new Customized Cash Rewards Account could produce $288.98 in modeled first-year value under the assumptions used in this comparison, including the card’s introductory rewards and the separate debit-card subscription credit.
- Rewards depend on merchant coding, enrollment, spending caps, qualifying payments and the specific streaming service, so actual cash back and credits can differ from these estimates.
My BofA setup versus standalone streaming cards
The streaming plans listed below cost $228.41 monthly, or $2,740.92 annually, at their published U.S. monthly prices.
My BofA setup assigns Paramount+ Premium’s $167.88 annual cost to debit, using the separate BofA Rewards subscription credit, which paying with CCR would not trigger. The remaining $2,573.04 in annual subscription spending goes on CCR. For each standalone-card comparison, the entire $2,740.92 annual streaming budget is charged to the competing credit card.
I use this formula to compare the annual value of each payment setup:
Annual value = cash back + usable subscription credits − card annual fee
| Payment setup | Ongoing annual cash back | Annual subscription credits | Card fee: first year / ongoing | First-year value | Ongoing annual value |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| CCR + Preferred Honors debit benefit | $115.79 | $96 | $0 / $0 | $288.98 | $211.79 |
| American Express Blue Cash Everyday® (BCE) | $27.41 | $84 | $0 / $0 | $111.41 | $111.41 |
| American Express Blue Cash Preferred® (BCP) | $153.67 | $120 | $0 / $95 | $273.67 | $178.67 |
| U.S. Bank Cash+® Visa Signature® | $137.05 | $0 (none included) | $0 / $0 | $137.05 | $137.05 |
These are 12-month estimates, not rewards already received. First-year totals include applicable introductory rewards and fee waivers. All totals assume qualifying purchases, available room under the spending caps and full monthly credit use. Every card’s one-time sign-up cash bonus is excluded; this is not a complete welcome-offer comparison.
The annual-value comparison includes $84/year in Disney Streaming Credits for Blue Cash Everyday and $120/year for Blue Cash Preferred toward my existing Hulu bill. These estimates assume enrollment, qualifying direct billing and full monthly credit use.
For an existing BofA Rewards Preferred Honors member, this $228.41/month streaming budget could generate $211.79 annually using Customized Cash Rewards plus the separate Paramount+ credit for using debit—$33.12 more than Blue Cash Preferred used alone, after its ongoing annual fee.
The $96 is a BofA banking benefit, not a CCR statement credit. This compares my existing BofA setup with standalone cards; combinations pairing another credit card with BofA debit are outside its scope.
My streaming subscriptions—and the benefit each payment uses
“Online Shopping” is one of CCR’s choice categories, and it includes eligible streaming. Every expense below is a subscription; no retail purchases are added.
The CCR rows use the ongoing 4.5% cash back rate: the 3% choice-category rate plus my 50% relationship bonus at the BofA Rewards Preferred Honors tier. The eligible first-year rate is explained separately below.
| Subscription | Monthly amount | Payment method | Benefit used |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hulu + Live TV (With Ads), with Disney+ and ESPN Select | $99.99 | CCR | Online Shopping cash back |
| Viki Pass Standard | $7.99 | CCR | Online Shopping cash back |
| Crunchyroll Fan | $9.99 | CCR | Online Shopping cash back |
| Paramount+ Premium | $13.99 | My BofA debit card | Up to $8 monthly credit |
| HBO Max Standard (ad-free) | $18.49 | CCR | Online Shopping cash back |
| YouTube Premium, family plan | $26.99 | CCR | Online Shopping cash back |
| Netflix Premium | $26.99 | CCR | Online Shopping cash back |
| Apple TV | $14.99 | CCR | Online Shopping cash back |
| Prime Video standalone—comparison substitute | $8.99 | CCR | Online Shopping cash back |
| Total | $228.41 | $214.42 on CCR credit card; $13.99 on BofA debit card |
These are published U.S. monthly prices for the named plans, before taxes—not rounded estimates or verified charges for every account. Paramount+ Premium is my confirmed plan. I pay for an annual Amazon Prime membership; this example substitutes $8.99 monthly for standalone Prime Video rather than adding another subscription.
Why cash back on the same subscription varies by credit card
Paying for the same streaming subscription with different credit cards can earn different cash back. Each card has its own rewards categories and rates, so a subscription that qualifies for bonus cash back on one card may earn only the base rate on another.
| Card | Rewards category | Ongoing cash back rates |
|---|---|---|
| Bank of America® Customized Cash Rewards | Online Shopping | 4.5% with standard benefits at the BofA Rewards Preferred Honors tier. |
| American Express Blue Cash Everyday® | Other eligible purchases | 1%; streaming does not qualify for its online retail category. |
| American Express Blue Cash Preferred® | Select U.S. streaming subscriptions | 6% on qualifying listed providers; 1% on other eligible purchases. |
| U.S. Bank Cash+® Visa Signature® | TV, Internet & Streaming Services | 5% with quarterly category enrollment and available cap room. |
For Blue Cash Preferred, Viki and Crunchyroll are absent from Amex’s published select-streaming list, so their combined $215.76 annual cost is modeled at 1%. The remaining $2,525.16 is modeled at 6%: $2,525.16 × 6% + $215.76 × 1% = $153.67 annual cash back.
U.S. Bank Cash+ is modeled at 5% on all subscriptions, assuming qualifying merchant coding and available room under its $2,000 quarterly cap shared across two selected categories. These are eligibility assumptions, not verified results for every charge.
An eligible new Customized Cash Rewards account: 7.5% in year one with Preferred Honors
The introductory bonus applies to the first year after an eligible credit-card account is opened—not someone’s first year in BofA Rewards.
Bank of America’s current Customized Cash Rewards offer combines the regular 3% cash-back rate in the selected category with a separate 3% first-year bonus.
With my status at the BofA Rewards Preferred Honors tier, the 50% relationship bonus increases the regular 3% rate to 4.5%. Under BofA’s published offer rules, that relationship bonus does not apply to the separate first-year bonus. Adding the promotional 3% cash back therefore brings the eligible first-year rate to 7.5%.
First year rate: (3% × 1.5) + 3% = 7.5% cash back.
After the introductory bonus ends: 3% × 1.5 = 4.5% ongoing cash back.
These selected-category rates apply within CCR’s $2,500 quarterly spending cap, shared with grocery-store and wholesale-club purchases.
First-year illustration: Where the rewards come from
The $2,573.04 below is a year of the eight subscriptions assigned to CCR ($214.42 × 12 months). Paramount+’s $167.88 in annual debit payments is excluded from that spending.
| Benefit on $2,573.04 of annual CCR spending | Eligible first-year cash back or benefits | Ongoing cash back or benefits (per year) |
|---|---|---|
| Regular CCR rewards: $2,573.04 × 3% | $77.19 | $77.19 |
| Preferred Honors tier bonus: $2,573.04 × 3% × 50% | +$38.60 | +$38.60 |
| Introductory bonus: $2,573.04 × 3% | +$77.19 | — |
| Total CCR cash back | $192.98 | $115.79 |
| Separate debit subscription credit: $8 × 12 months | +$96.00 | +$96.00 |
| Combined value, with no card annual fee | $288.98 | $211.79 |
The $167.88 paid by debit earns no Customized Cash Rewards cash back. Both periods assume Preferred Honors tier benefits and qualifying payments for all 12 months. CCR has no annual fee.

Should I use debit or Customized Cash Rewards for Paramount+ Premium?
I pay $13.99 monthly for Paramount+ Premium and recently switched the bill to my BofA debit card. To receive the credit, I enrolled in the subscription benefit and paid Paramount+ directly using the debit card linked to the Bank of America checking account I designate for that benefit.
The benefit is up to $8 each month. Receiving the maximum $96 credit per year requires eligible payments across 12 months—not one annual payment.
How debit could lower my Paramount+ Premium bill
Paramount+ Premium costs $167.88 annually. The entire $13.99 monthly payment goes on my BofA debit card, so I count only the debit credit—not CCR cash back.
| Payment method | Annual credit or cash back | Annual cost after rewards |
|---|---|---|
| My BofA debit card | $96.00 | $71.88 |
| CCR at 7.5%—modeled eligible first year | $12.59 | $155.29 |
| CCR at 4.5%—ongoing | $7.55 | $160.33 |
Paying Paramount+ Premium’s $167.88 annual bill with my BofA debit card would save $88.45 more per year than CCR at 4.5%: $96 in credits instead of $7.55 in cash back.
When does credit card cash back match the $8 debit credit?
At the Preferred Honors tier, BofA Rewards offers up to $8 in debit credits each month through eligible debit-card payments. The comparison below assumes your payment qualifies, costs at least $8, and you haven’t used any of that month’s debit credit.
To find the monthly payment at which CCR earns the same $8 in cash back, use this formula:
Break-even payment = $8 ÷ CCR cash-back rate.
That is approximately $106.67 monthly at the modeled 7.5% cash back rate, or $177.78 at 4.5% ongoing cashback rate. Below those thresholds, the $8 credit exceeds the cash back you would earn by paying with CCR. The $13.99 Paramount+ Premium payment is well below either threshold.
These figures apply to the subscription moved to debit, not the entire streaming budget. Once one qualifying payment earns the full $8 monthly credit, moving more subscriptions to the debit adds no further credit that month.
Choose the lowest-priced eligible subscription you already pay for that costs at least $8 a month, and put it on debit. This earns the full credit while keeping more spending on CCR, assuming the same credit-card rate on the alternatives.
What I would keep an eye on
When using this strategy to maximize your savings, pay attention to:
- The quarterly spend cap. The Customized Cash Rewards choice-category purchases share a $2,500 quarterly spending limit with grocery-store and wholesale-club purchases. In my case, streaming uses $643.26 each quarter, leaving $1,856.74 before other spending that counts toward the limit.
- Billing and credits. Merchant information determines rewards eligibility, and third-party billing can affect the result. The comparison assumes direct qualifying payments and full monthly credits—not simply ownership of a card.
- Category selection. I can leave Online Shopping selected on CCR rather than enrolling quarterly as U.S. Bank Cash+ requires. That continuity appeals to me. The separate debit subscription benefit required its own enrollment, which I completed.
Why I prefer this streaming payment setup
My reason for choosing Customized Cash Rewards is the relationship behind it: enhanced cash back on most subscriptions and a separate debit credit on Paramount+ Premium.
This setup can produce $211.79 in ongoing annual value for my budget, without relying on a new-account offer. The $288.98 first-year illustration shows what an eligible new account could earn instead.
I already have the banking relationship. This is about using its benefits—not moving assets solely for streaming rewards or claiming one card is best for everyone.
I’m choosing the combined return from my BofA setup, not just the largest streaming percentage.
Methodology: Full-12-month estimates use the published prices above and standard rates at the BofA Rewards Preferred Honors tier, not account-specific legacy extensions. They assume Paramount+’s eligibility for the debit subscription credit, required enrollment, unchanged benefits, eligible payments, available caps and balances paid without interest. Sign-up cash bonuses, unrelated benefits, additional taxes and fees, and costs of establishing a banking relationship are excluded. Actual rewards may vary with billing and rounding.
