How to Make Whipped Cream by Hand

Fresh, homemade whipped cream is one of my favorite things. That's right, I love it so much that it's not just a favorite food, it's a favorite thing. It's delicious on its own, divine on  desserts, and oh-so-simple to make, requiring just one ingredient — heavy cream. (Although you can include other things. We'll get to that.) Making your own whipped cream is easy if you have an electric mixer, but it can seem super intimidating if you don't have one. The good news is that making whipped cream by hand is possible; it just takes a little time and gumption.

That's why I made a video that doesn't just teach you how to make your own whipped cream (with options for delicious flavors like mint, vanilla, and bourbon) — but it also features a food quiz to entertain you while you're whisking.

I'm writing this on the eve of Valentine's Day, which is a perfect day for whipped cream. But then again, I think every day is a perfect day for for whipped cream. So no matter what the occasion, grab a bowl and some heavy cream, and get ready to make something delicious.

Homemade Whipped Cream

  • 1 half-pint of cold heavy whipping cream
  • 2-4 tbsp of powdered sugar (or more or less to taste; optional)
  • 1/2 tsp of vanilla extract, peppermint extract, or liqueur (optional)

Combine all ingredients in a bowl. Whisk continuously until the cream forms soft peaks.

We love making homemade whipped cream at home!
We use our stand mixer with metal bowl and whisk to skip the arm workout.
Throw the bowl and the whisk in the freezer for about 10-15 minutes before starting, then use the recipe above, but let the mixer do the work.
Start it on a slow setting to prevent splashing, then slowly increase the speed of the mixer until you get the soft peaks. You'll know when it's done. :)

I can't believe you need a recipe and a video for this! I'm guessing most people use canned whipped cream? I live in New Zealand, one of the biggest dairy exporters in the world and home made is far more common than canned.

In fact, canned is almost unpatriotic!
