I've written about free online storage in the past, but nothing comes close to this. For a limited time, filedropper.com is giving away 250GB storage accounts to bloggers for free. This account usually costs $10 a month. THIS DEAL HAS ENDED, BUT I DO HAVE SOME SLIGHTLY GOOD NEWS...
UPDATE: I got in touch with Jay from FileDropper. As I suspected, the killer traffic from Digg and Reddit was responsible for the deal ending so early. Jay cannot give out any more free Gold accounts, but has offered to give Ten 5G accounts (usually $12 a year) to Wisebread readers. I will be offering the first two accounts to Michelle and Norm, who tried and failed to get the Gold account. If anyone else wants a 5GB account, leave your comment here. I will arrange it for the first 8 commenters WITH A GOOD ENOUGH REASON to get one. A simple "I want it" won't be enough to qualify. Thanks folks.
I've been test-driving this service on-and-off all day and I can't find a flaw, other than the upload limit...which is 5GB! I searched my system and I'd say 98% of my files fall beneath that size. Even a DVD movie rip is generally below 5GB so that it can fit onto a regular DVD.
What I also like about filedropper is the sheer simplicity. There's no complex interface or software to download. It's as basic as it gets. There are a few google ads and a donate button which makes me think that this could really pay off for the site via Adsense money. But they're very small, a tiny distraction and well worth it for the amount of space and freedom the account gives you.
The deal expires on May 15th, so sign up quick. Just go here and give a name, password and email address. That's it, no huge form, it takes seconds and you're off and running. Let me know how it works for you, I've found it to be excellent and well worth the price (or should I say no price) of admission.

This is a great find, thanks for sharing.
Thanks for this tip! I have been using box.net but I'm going to give this one a try!
Ben
i've been trying to up a 2.5 gig file.... but it simply won't work at all. pretty frustrating...
Looks like its not free afterall :(
Nope, no deal now.
The site is getting insane traffic from digg, reddit, technorati and a bunch of other blogs (including this one). The free signup should be back tomorrow, and you will still have until May 15th to get your account. This unusually high traffic is also responsible for the slow upload/download times. When it returns to normal, it will be a great asset.
Thanks for the link! Always nice to have free stuff!
I'm just going to throw out a caution for everyone - they can stop offering this for free at any time, and then you may have to pay to get any files back.
I won't go in to the gory details of MediaMax, but as of April 25 they deleted all of their free accounts. Holders of these accounts had 6 days to get their stuff off or upgrade to a paid account to avoid losing files.
I've only had my File Dropper acocunt a few hours, but as Paul points out, I LOVE the simplicity and ease of use!
LOL

Thanks for the link.
I want to say I appreciate the heads up first and had no trouble opening the account. However! I tried several times on both firefox and IE to upload one picture (695kb) on my dial up connection to this account just for test purposes. Nothing. IE just froze up like a lone baby penguin in an arctic storm. Firfox made a valiant effort of getting about half way before a freeze up and I could never get the whole picture to load. I dont know if it was the sudden rush jamming the site or what. Maybe I'll try again in a few days when the frenzy dies down but if it stays like this even a free account does no good if people can't upload to it. Thanks again anyway for trying to put the word out. Any updates you hear from the site would be appreciated.
Yesterday when I checked this, it said the deal would be available again the next morning. Today, there's no sign that there was ever a deal at all.
Oh well, I was too slow, I guess :)
You're right Norm. I checked the link today and Filedropper has killed the special signup link, despite making it clear the offer was open until May 15th. This is something that really gets my goat. You can't just pull an offer because it became more popular than you thought it would. In fact, FileDropper targetted blogs and sites like Digg and Reddit so that they would actually get huge traffic. I have contacted FileDropper, I hope to have a resolution for Wisebread readers within a day or two.
Seems that the deal is off but an account I opened 25 minutes after Mr. Michael posted remains functional and appears working correctly after the rush.
This is one of those things that kind of gets to me. When a company offers something free like this they have to realize that it is going to hit the netwaves big time. They should be willing to hold to their promises or just offer it limitedly in the first place. If I could be so fortunate to receive one of the remaining free offers, I would be grateful, if not eternally, at least til 2038. I do some file transfers occasionally back and forth between work and home and generally have to rely on my dying USB HDD. These are generally too large to transport via Gmail so I am stuck with that as my only option. Please help me out here. I have been trying to sign up since Sunday night.
I work at a job that requires me to use several different computers at different desks. An online file storage system would be ideal for me to be able to store files that I need to access regularly
I am a photographer and this would be great for backup storage. I have lost (damaged) so many USB flash drives in the past two years. It would be great to have a large repository to place files that sounds so simple to use.

I have the ability to work from home on occasion, and there have been many times where I've ended up having to go down to the office to email additional files to a client. I have yet to find an easy and convenient way to have everything available all the time, wherever I may be.
Having a way to just put all current client documentation and files online and accessible at home would not only make life easier, but would save me an untold amount of gas driving to and from the office on days I didn't expect I'd have to do so.
Thanks for giving me a chance for this.

though I could still use the smaller space to back up my all-important thesis stuff plus a few personal files. I get nervous every time the thunderstorms roll into Missouri. Still have any accounts left?
Paul,
I'm leaving the states on the 18th of May to begin service as a Peace Corps volunteer in Romania. I'll be working in a high school, or secondary school, teaching English as a foreign language-- as such, I've been guaranteed access to internet, whether in my apartment, at work, or nearby internet cafe'.
I've been encouraged to bring my laptop, as a result. Originally, I was going to bring my external hard drive out to back up any files: writing, assignments, pictures, etc..
However, if I could get one of the online storage accounts, then I could leave my external HD here. It'd be one less expensive thing to pack, and claim traveler's insurance on. Also, I imagine the worst case scenario is my apartment getting broken into, in which case my laptop and external HD would almost certainly get snatched. If I had online file storage, my HD would be safe here the states, but I could still recover any necessary files/photos from my post abroad.
Cheers,
J.''
Folks, this offer is for the 5G storage, not 250GB.
Why did file dropper mention till the 15th of May, what they could have done is said 48 hours for 250 gig free and 5 gig there after until May 15 free.
Their promotion was way more popular than they expected, so they cut it off early. As I mentioned, even the 5G would help me out (my whole documents directory is only 15G), but I am disappointed that by sleeping on it overnight I wasn't able to take them up on it. They'd have done better to say "up to X number of accounts," but I don't think they anticipated word of mouth very well.
No worries about that.
Let me know - thanks!

...once I have all ten names, I will ask the admin team to forward me the email addresses. I will send them to Jay at FileDropper, who should be able to set you up directly. Any issues, let me know. Right now, I count 9...

That leaves one spot open.
Should I give up expecting an account? Just checking.
And they have two files of mine that I can't get back. Fortunately, they aren't critical and I have backups but that's just unethical. I was going to use it to transfer some small video files to my sister who's putting together a grandkids video for our parents. Hmmph!
wow thats cool, i always need more memory....
Thanks, I was able to snag one of those free 250 GB accounts in time.
Does anyone have a problem of not being able to see all their files on FileDropper? I can only see the first 14, any after that aren't in the viewable area. (I use Safari and Firefox.)
Also, I tried uploading a .zip file this morning. It seemed to upload properly, but gave an error that it wasn't able to display the page when it was done, so it never showed up in my file list.
Another great free storage site is www.humyo.com. With their free accounts, you get 25 gigs of media (video, pictures, etc.) and 5 gigs of "other" files. I've been using it for months now, and love it.
I am trying to upload an 80mb file and Internet explorer just freezes up after the upload completes. The status says "Upload Complete. Redirecting .." and then nothing happens. Firefox just times out. Anyone else have this issue or know how to solve this?
I am in the process of trying to setup a VPN for our very small office with limited resoures. I am doing everything I can to go green and save our natural resources. I would prefer to not have to purchase a new router when my current router is working perfectly. Thanks.
I just found this site today while searching online backups. I had a 500 GB external hard drive half full of files.Precious pictures of grandchildren and family as well as documents I'd created and websites I'd made. But about 4 months ago the external drive quit working. I was SO upset. I tried everything I could think of to get my lost files back but absolutely nothing worked. I gave up. But then I bought a new Oyen from eBay-a 1TB. The first day it worked fine. I backed up my entire laptop on it. But the next day I plugged it into the USB port and there was nothing! It doesn't work & I can't return it because there is no way to get my files cleaned off it. So I'm out $118 there! I've given up on external hard drives and looking for online storage in hopes this way I won't lose all my files again. I wish I had found this site earlier because I would have jumped at that free 250GB from filehopper. Unfortunately it's too late for that now. My income is extremely limited so I need something affordable. (I am a senior citizen) If you know of anything please let me know because I could sure use some help with this. I'm scared to death of losing all the files on my laptop but don't trust external hard drives anymore. I really like this site by the way.
