I must admit I'm not that tech savvy, but obviously texting is probably the easiest and most people have a phone so that's pretty darn cheap

A good tip is to use Google hangouts! You can have up to ten people in a video call, and it's complete free!
LinkedIn, I feel it is the best way to keep up with what is going on in the business world.

Normally we email but now just received a new computer that has Skype and all I have to do is figure out how to use it.

Facebook and Skype has helped a lot in that department. I'm still a huge fan of snail mail. I love sending cards. Cards are inexpensive, stamps are inexpensive-ish, and it's a great way to show someone you care.
I used LinkedIn (as other readers have posted); I think that is the "most professional" social network to keep your "personal space" so they're not snooping around your personal life (that is unless you have them on your FB etc).

I use FaceTime, it doesn't cost me any extra and it works for me and my friends.

Keep in contact via e-mail and Skype. E-mail is a convenient option when the other party is not available to talk. When you want to talk or see each other face to face then Skype is a nice alternative if you cannot meet up with the person.
