The travel business has been on the upswing since 2010. After all, this is a nearly 1.3 trillion industry that supports some 8.2 million jobs. That's quite a few airline flights and hotel stays. And while travel deals can be found at every corner of the Internet, it's often best to focus on destinations that have flown slightly under the radar. For example, 2014 should see some new and exciting trends in the industry that feature big savings on certain unheralded locales. (See also: 11 Vacation Destinations That Stretch Your Dollar)
Those who are planning their next solo or family vacation should consider this locale. Ecuador may be overlooked due to its size, but don't let its small stature fool you — there is much to see and do here. Nature lovers can head out of the capital city of Quito and explore lush rainforests and idyllic mountain towns. And of course Ecuador possesses the granddaddy of all eco-tourism destinations: the Galapagos Islands.
What makes Ecuador such a hot destination in 2014 is that, relative to many other overseas destinations, it is fairly inexpensive to get to. For example, at the time of writing, Priceline noted round-trip flights under $900.
Americans are notorious for not venturing out of their comfort zone, at least as far as traveling is concerned. They travel to Europe, a few places in Latin America, and that about does it. However, there's every indication that India could be on many a U.S. traveler's radar in the coming year. Unfortunately, the economics make sense mostly because of the devastating drop of the rupee, India's currency, as compared to the dollar. That means despite the hefty airfare, the country itself will be more affordable than ever for foreign visitors. Plus, new investments by international hotel chains, such as Hilton and Hyatt, should trigger lower rates on rooms and tours.
One major trend in international travel involves trips on a variety of European rivers. This trend is gaining so much ground, in fact, that a minimum of 20 new boats are projected to make their maiden voyages in 2014. It's not hard to see the appeal of this kind of trip. River cruises allow the traveler to take in a wide variety of scenery over a short time. And with all those new cabins to fill, prices should be lower than ever.
Always a relaxing weekend getaway for Californians, Palm Springs is fast becoming a popular excursion for those outside the Golden State. A boom of new hotel openings, such as the Ace Hotel and Joie de Vivre's Saguaro, plus more airlines now operating to and from Palm Springs International airport, should allow for a more robust influx of those tourists looking for sun and golf.
You can't keep a good state down. Superstorm Sandy certainly tried her best, but New Jersey, and particularly its coastal area, is rebounding. However, it's a gradual process of recovery, which is precisely why travelers can find good deals to its coastline. Not only are hotels and tours offering big savings to bring back the tourists, but events in 2014, such as the Miss America Pageant and Super Bowl, should be a boon to tourism.
These are just a few of the trends shaping the landscape of deals and savings in the travel industry. There are other factors, of course, such as the World Cup. Looking in the realm of global events such as this one should spell even more savings for intrepid travelers everywhere.
