Green Living

big green purse

I have four copies of Big Green Purse to give away. In it, Diane MacEachern offers a simple message: Use your spending power to create a cleaner, greener world. Of course, many of us simply can't afford to go green all the time. Diane MacEachern focuses on items that make the most impact, highlights eco-cheap money saving strategies, and reveals marketing techniques that try to sell "greenwash" products that aren't really green.

There are many tips that help increase your car's mpg, including things like removing items from your trunk, inflating your tires, and keeping your engine in good condition with regular maintenance. But out of all the suggestions, there was only one thing that skyrocketed the mileage on my 2001 Civic from 32 to 47 mpg. I slowed down.

Rich by Thirty

I read this book because I was intrigued by the 25 year-old author. By the time she was eight years old, she was earning money by operating a lemonade stand in the summer and shoveling snow in the winter. On her 10th birthday, she used the $100 of gift money she received to purchase a Government Savings Bond. At age 14, she bought her first mutual funds. Four years later, she was investing in stocks.

Don't be fooled by inflated thread count

Posted 27 weeks 6 days ago by Lynn Truong

Consumer Affairs

Bed sheets

Most of us understand that "thread count" indicates the quality of linen. The higher the thread count, the softer, smoother, and more luxurious the sheets. But the class action lawsuit against Bed Bath & Beyond has revealed a dirty little secret manufacturers do to inflate the thread count of their product. Make sure you know exactly what you're buying.

What is Your Best Interview Advice?

I've found that the most effective productivity trick is simply to get enough sleep. What Is Your Dream Job?

Posted 1 year 2 weeks ago by Lynn Truong

Career and Income

i heart my job
I honestly don't know what my dream job would be. I started with wanting to be an actress to producer (my last job squashed any glamorous visions of the Entertainment industry), to psychiatrist to writer and now...I don't know. All I know for sure is what I don't want to do: have a long commute spend all day doing things that don't matter to me not have any decision making abilities on the projects I'm completing work for someone I don't respect doesn't challenge me daily and help me grow into a better person in general What I'm doing to get my dream job: I'm not doing any of the above.

What Are Your Tipping Rules?

Posted 1 year 4 weeks ago by Lynn Truong

Frugal Living

tip jar
I thought I knew what the rules for tipping were. When I'm at a restaurant, my standard is to pay double the tax (comes out to 16.5% where I am). I'll give 20% if it was a super meal with super service (and I'm not that hard to please). I give my stylist and esthetician at least 20% because they're awesome and they're *relatively* cheap compared to others I've been to. I'll tip the car wash guys $3-$5 because I know they're not getting paid well and I hate washing cars.
